Container Selection Guide: Differences Between 10, 20 and 40 ft

Determine the right container size step by step based on internal volume, route, door access and site conditions.

Container Selection Guide: Differences Between 10, 20 and 40 ft

The right choice is not based on length alone

Container selection often begins with the question of 20 ft or 40 ft, but the right decision must also consider cargo weight, packaging, stowage plan, site access and transport mode. Two loads with the same volume may require different equipment because of their centre of gravity or door-clearance requirements.

The first step is to distinguish net cargo weight from gross weight; the second is to establish the product's actual dimensions including external packaging. Forklift turning space, crane requirements and door swing clearance should be included from the outset.

When is a 10 ft container advantageous?

A 10 ft container is effective for in-factory stock, construction-site storage, spare parts and confined sites. Its short shell makes positioning easier, while shelving, electrical and ventilation modifications can extend its functionality.

The balance of a 20 ft container

A 20 ft Dry container provides a balanced standard between payload capacity and internal volume. For dense and heavy materials, choosing 20 ft instead of 40 ft can help keep total weight within legal and operational limits.

The difference between 40 ft and High Cube

40 ft models are efficient for long and high-volume cargo. The High Cube option adds approximately 30 cm of height, creating internal volume of around 76 m³. It can help reduce transport cost per unit for lightweight but bulky products.

Pre-quotation checklist

Compile the cargo list, total weight, maximum item dimensions, loading method, delivery address, duration of use and requested modifications in one file. This information clarifies the production schedule and correct equipment choice as well as the price.
